Lamine Yamal Sends Strong Champions League Message Ahead of Feyenoord Clash
Lamine Yamal has made Barcelona’s priority clear ahead of their Champions League opener against Feyenoord: Europe’s biggest trophy is the target.
The 19-year-old spoke to the media before the match, discussing the Champions League, his new leadership role, the Ballon d’Or race, Real Madrid and his Barcelona teammates.
‘There’s No Greater Motivation Than the Champions League’
Yamal is entering the season with more responsibility than ever after becoming one of Barcelona’s captains.
But his focus remains firmly on winning trophies.
“There’s no greater motivation than the Champions League. We’re all focused on it. It’s the most special competition.”
He also welcomed the excitement surrounding new teammates, including Rodri and Gordon.
Yamal Proud to Be a Barcelona Captain
Despite being only 19, Yamal has already been trusted with a leadership role inside the Barcelona dressing room.
He says he is embracing the responsibility.
“I’m proud to be one of Barça’s captains. I’m grateful to all my teammates, and I’m really happy.”
Yamal also named Raphinha, Pedri and Eric García as players who have influenced him since arriving at the club.
‘I Think I Stand a Chance’ in Ballon d’Or Race
Yamal remains one of the leading contenders for the Ballon d’Or after another spectacular season with Barcelona and Spain.
However, he insisted the final decision is out of his hands.
“I don’t think it’s up to me, but to the journalists.”
Asked whether he needed to campaign for votes, Yamal confidently rejected the idea.
“I don’t have to convince you of anything. I’ve done a very good job this year.”
When reminded that Ousmane Dembélé did not include him among his top three favourites, Yamal simply laughed it off.
“He’s friends with Kylian, isn’t he? To be honest, I don’t mind.”
Yamal: ‘If You Don’t Run, You’ll Lose’
The teenager also dismissed the idea that superstar attackers should be exempt from defensive duties.
For Yamal, pressing is essential if Barcelona want to compete for major trophies.
“If we want to win, we have to run; if you don’t run, you’ll lose.”
His personal target is equally straightforward: keep improving.
“I’m very young, but by listening I’ll be able to improve – that’s my aim.”
‘I’ve Never Been Happier’
Yamal also addressed speculation that he had been unhappy after appearing frustrated during Barcelona’s match against Elche.
He blamed the extreme heat rather than any personal problem.
“I’m 19, I’ve just won a world championship and I’ve had the holiday of my life. I’ve never been happier in my whole life than I am right now.”
He also dismissed questions surrounding Real Madrid’s form, making it clear that Barcelona are focused on themselves.
Yamal Praises Fermin and Olmo
The Barcelona winger also spoke highly of Fermin López and Dani Olmo, highlighting the different qualities they bring to the team.
“They’re both absolutely brilliant players.”
He explained that Fermin attacks space aggressively, while Olmo is more comfortable holding onto the ball.
Yamal says he feels equally comfortable playing alongside both.
Ready to Accept the Bench
Despite becoming one of Barcelona’s most important players, Yamal insists he understands that competition for places is unavoidable.
“I don’t mind being a substitute. There are lots of very good players. I’m ready if it’s my turn to be one one day.”
For now, however, his attention is on Feyenoord—and Barcelona’s biggest European ambition: winning the Champions League.
