Yamal's international record is particularly unusual because his only defeat came when he was not in the starting XI. A previous analysis of his record noted that he had started 24 of his first 29 Spain appearances, winning 18 and drawing six of those starts.
That does not prove that Spain need Yamal to win.

And there is another important detail: an unbeaten record is not the same thing as a perfect record. Spain have drawn matches with Yamal starting, including the 2025 Nations League final against Portugal, which finished 2–2 after 90 minutes before Portugal won the penalty shootout. In other words, the claim about never losing in 90 minutes remains accurate, but it should not be confused with Spain winning every game Yamal starts.

Perhaps the more interesting question is not whether Yamal is the sole reason for Spain's record.
It is whether Spain have already reached the point where leaving him out changes the way opponents prepare for them.

That is potentially more significant than the unbeaten statistic itself.
