Santi Cazorla Backs Lamine Yamal for Ballon d’Or: “He’s Earned the Right”
Spanish football legend Santi Cazorla has publicly backed Lamine Yamal to win the Ballon d'Or, arguing that the Barcelona star's performances have earned him the right to claim the prestigious individual award.
Cazorla, one of Spain's most respected midfielders of his generation, was asked by SPORT which player he would choose for the prize.
His answer was clear: Yamal.
Cazorla Makes His Case for Yamal
Age is not a factor for Cazorla when assessing Yamal's Ballon d'Or credentials.
The former Spain international believes the Barcelona winger should be judged purely on what he has achieved on the pitch.
“I’d give the Ballon d’Or to Lamine. He plays for our country, he’s Spanish, and he’s more than earned the right to win it.”
Yamal has continued to establish himself among the most prominent players in world football, producing influential performances for both Barcelona and Spain.
For Cazorla, the teenager's age should not diminish the strength of his individual case.
The former midfielder acknowledged that the final decision belongs to the Ballon d'Or voters, but he believes Yamal's performances speak for themselves.
“We’re not the ones making the decisions, but on merit alone, it should be his.”
Cazorla Loving Barcelona's Young Generation
Cazorla's admiration extends beyond Yamal.
The former Spain international also praised Hansi Flick's Barcelona, particularly the quality of the young players emerging within the team.
“I love it. This Barça side is sweeping all before it at the start of the season. It has young players of an incredible standard.”
Barcelona have placed significant faith in their younger talents, with Yamal and Pau Cubarsi among the players who have become important figures at senior level.
Cazorla believes their performances have made Barcelona particularly entertaining to watch.
“I Really Enjoy Watching Barça”
The former Arsenal, Villarreal and Spain midfielder also admitted that he has enjoyed following Barcelona's performances this season.
The club's strong start has generated considerable excitement, while the ongoing competition at the top of La Liga is expected to provide plenty of drama as the campaign progresses.
“I really enjoy watching Barça.”
Cazorla also expressed hope that the title race remains competitive and entertaining for supporters.
“Let’s hope La Liga proves entertaining for the fans.”
For Yamal, having another highly respected Spanish football figure publicly support his Ballon d'Or case adds to the growing recognition surrounding his remarkable rise.
