Barcelona Remain Calm After UEFA Update on Negreira Case Following Real Madrid Complaint

Barcelona are maintaining a calm stance after UEFA confirmed that it has received additional documents from Real Madrid relating to the ongoing Negreira investigation.

The development generated significant attention after UEFA confirmed that its Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors had received a substantial amount of documentation from Real Madrid and would assess it as part of their existing review.

However, Barcelona have moved quickly to clarify that UEFA has not opened a new investigation against the club.

Instead, the Catalan giants say the proceedings began in 2023 and have never formally been closed. The latest documents from Real Madrid will simply be considered within that existing process.

Barcelona Insist There Is No New UEFA Case

According to Barcelona's official response, the wording of UEFA's statement is important.

The club points out that UEFA referred to an investigation and review that are already “ongoing.” Barcelona therefore reject descriptions suggesting that UEFA has reopened or reactivated a previously closed case.

The club also stated that, as of October 1, UEFA investigators had not made any new requests to Barcelona or formally forwarded Real Madrid's complaint to the club.

Barcelona say they will respond if further requests are made, while continuing to cooperate with the authorities involved in the process.

What UEFA Has Actually Confirmed

UEFA's latest communication does not establish that Barcelona have committed any wrongdoing.

The governing body confirmed that it had received substantial documentation from Real Madrid concerning the Negreira matter and that UEFA's Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors would assess those documents as part of their ongoing review.

That means the latest development concerns the assessment of new documentation, rather than a finding against Barcelona.

UEFA had already appointed Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors in March 2023 to investigate a potential violation of its legal framework in connection with the Negreira case.

The latest development therefore adds material to an existing process rather than establishing a new case.

Barcelona Point to Their Continued UEFA Participation

Barcelona have also highlighted that they have continued to obtain their UEFA licence and participate in European competitions since the investigation began.

The club says this forms part of the context surrounding the latest developments, although continued participation should not be interpreted as a final determination on the underlying allegations.

Barcelona also maintain their position regarding the payments at the centre of the Negreira case, arguing that they related to technical refereeing reports rather than payments intended to influence refereeing decisions.

The allegations and their legal implications remain matters for the relevant authorities to assess.

The Investigation Remains Ongoing

For now, the situation remains unresolved.

Real Madrid have supplied additional documentation, UEFA's investigators will assess it, and Barcelona have reiterated that they remain confident in their position while cooperating with the ongoing process.

Barcelona also note that the UEFA proceedings are subject to the outcome of the criminal case currently being heard in Spain.

Consequently, the latest UEFA announcement should not be treated as either a finding of guilt or an exoneration.

For Joan Laporta and the Barcelona hierarchy, the immediate priority will be allowing the relevant authorities to complete their work while the team concentrates on its performances on the pitch.

The Negreira case remains an important legal and institutional issue surrounding the club, but the latest UEFA update has not itself established any new wrongdoing by Barcelona.
