Barcelona Identify Their Next Contract Renewal Priority as Gerard Martin Talks Continue
Barcelona are preparing to secure the long-term future of another important first-team player, with versatile defender Gerard Martin reportedly next in line for a contract renewal.
According to Matteo Moretto on Radio MARCA, the Catalan giants have turned their attention to Martin after making progress on several other contract extensions. The move would reflect the defender’s growing importance under Hansi Flick and Barcelona’s desire to maintain stability within their squad.
The 24-year-old has steadily developed into a valuable member of the first team, offering the manager tactical flexibility across the defensive line.
Barcelona Continue to Secure Their Core Players
Barcelona have been working to protect the futures of several players as they build for the coming seasons.
The club recently announced the contract extension of young prospect Xavi Espart until 2030, while an agreement is reportedly already in place for captain Raphinha to sign a new deal.
Marc Bernal is also expected to receive an improved contract that reflects his growing role and importance within the squad.
Once those situations are finalised, Gerard Martin could become the next player to commit his future to the Blaugrana.
Gerard Martin Has Earned Flick’s Trust
Martin earned promotion to Barcelona’s first team during Hansi Flick’s first season in charge and has gradually established himself as a dependable option.
Although primarily a left-back, the Spaniard demonstrated his versatility last season by operating as a left-sided centre-back. His performances in that position helped him develop a reliable partnership with Pau Cubarsi.
Martin’s journey has not been without difficult moments, but his ability to adapt to different defensive roles has made him a useful asset for Flick.
Barcelona’s reported willingness to negotiate a new deal suggests the coaching staff and club hierarchy see him as part of their plans for the future.
His current contract runs until the summer of 2028, meaning the club has time to negotiate but is keen to address his long-term future before his existing agreement approaches its final stages.
Martin Has Made His Barcelona Future Clear
Martin has also expressed a strong desire to remain at Barcelona for many more years.
Discussing the possibility of renewing his contract, the defender said:
“I’d be delighted to stay here for a few more years. I’ll soon be on my 100th appearance, so hopefully there’ll be another 100. And as many as there are.”
His comments underline his commitment to the club and his ambition to continue contributing to the first team.
When asked whether he would consider signing a lifetime contract, Martin responded enthusiastically:
“Yes, of course. Well, I’d have to earn it, but yes, yes. Things are going well for now.”
His willingness to remain at Barcelona could help negotiations, although the final terms of any extension will depend on an agreement between the club and his representatives.
Barcelona Reportedly Target a Deal Until 2030 or 2031
Initial discussions have reportedly taken place between Barcelona and Martin’s camp regarding a contract extension.
The club’s intention is understood to be extending his current agreement by another two or three years. If an agreement is reached on those terms, Martin could remain at Camp Nou until the summer of 2030 or 2031.
Such a deal would provide Barcelona with greater long-term security in defence while rewarding a player who has grown into a trusted member of Flick’s squad.
Martin has featured in six of Barcelona’s eight matches in all competitions so far this season, further demonstrating his involvement in the manager’s plans.
While the renewal is not yet officially confirmed, the reported discussions and Martin’s own comments point towards a positive outlook for both parties.
For Barcelona, securing his future would be another step in retaining a core group of players capable of supporting the club’s ambitions in Spain and Europe.
