🔵🔴 Rodri Reveals What Barcelona Have Been Missing Under Flick
Rodri’s first start for Barcelona under Hansi Flick provided a powerful early indication of why the club considered the Spain international one of their most important summer signings.
The midfielder played 62 minutes in Barcelona’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Valencia, and although he did not dominate the game with spectacular moments, his influence was clear. Rodri brought something Barcelona have often lacked: calm, control and authority in the centre of the pitch.
Flick Already Sees Rodri’s Importance
Hansi Flick was quick to praise the midfielder after the match, highlighting not only his footballing intelligence but also the leadership qualities he can bring to a relatively young squad.
“Everything Rodri does makes sense. It’s exciting. Not only on the pitch, but also in the dressing room.”
Flick also pointed towards the potential benefits for Marc Bernal, who can learn from Rodri while competing for minutes in midfield.
Rodri and Pedri Already Building an Understanding
One of the most encouraging aspects of Rodri’s performance was his relationship with Pedri.
The two midfielders constantly adjusted their positions depending on the situation. Rodri frequently dropped deeper to help Barcelona build from the back, while Pedri operated further forward and looked to influence the attacking phase.
Their passing numbers underlined that connection. Pedri played 16 passes to Rodri, while Rodri returned 19 passes to his midfield partner.
Rather than slowing Barcelona down, Rodri appeared to give the team greater control over when to accelerate and when to patiently move the ball.
The Midfielder Who Makes Barcelona’s Attack More Dangerous
Rodri’s importance was perhaps best demonstrated when Barcelona were under pressure.
On one occasion, he received the ball with his back to goal near his own penalty area, resisted Valencia’s pressure and waited for the perfect moment to break the press with a long pass.
His contribution to Raphinha’s goal was another example. Rodri recovered possession before immediately playing the pass that released the Brazilian into space.
His statistics were equally impressive: 81 completed passes from 83 attempts, five accurate long balls, nine passes into the final third and six recoveries.
He also created a chance, won a ground duel and was never dribbled past. Remarkably, his only shot of the match struck the post.
Barcelona Finally Have a Different Kind of Midfielder
It is obviously too early to make definitive judgments about Rodri’s Barcelona career.
But his first start already demonstrated why his arrival could have a major impact on Flick’s system.
Barcelona already possess players capable of playing at tremendous speed. What Rodri offers is the ability to control that speed.
His presence allows Pedri and Barcelona’s attacking players to take more risks because they know there is someone behind them capable of managing the game.
For Marc Bernal, meanwhile, playing alongside a midfielder of Rodri’s experience could provide an invaluable learning opportunity.
If this is only the beginning, Barcelona may have finally found the midfield balance Flick has been looking for.
