Barcelona’s early-season headlines have been dominated by their search for a new striker, particularly the pursuit of Julian Alvarez. But while attention remains focused on the attack, Hansi Flick’s side is quietly building something equally important at the other end of the pitch.
The Blaugrana have opened their La Liga campaign with two wins and two clean sheets, matching a defensive record they had not achieved since the 2023/24 season.
Perfect Start for Flick’s Defence
Barcelona began the campaign with a commanding 5-0 victory over Elche, before producing another convincing performance in a 2-0 win against Athletic Club at Spotify Camp Nou.
The two results have left Barça alongside Real Betis as the only teams yet to concede in La Liga.
More importantly, this is the first time Flick has managed to start a league campaign with consecutive clean sheets since taking charge of Barcelona.
In his first season, Barcelona won their opening two matches but conceded against both Valencia and Athletic Club. The following campaign followed a similar pattern, with Barça keeping one clean sheet but conceding twice against Levante.
The latest defensive record therefore represents a notable improvement.
Flick Has More Defensive Options
One of the biggest differences this season is the number of defensive combinations available to Flick.
Against Elche, the Barcelona coach used Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, Gerard Martín and Xavi Espart in his back four. The combination produced a comfortable clean sheet.
Against Athletic Club, Pau Cubarsí returned to the starting lineup, giving Flick another high-quality option in central defence.
Eric Garcia has also strengthened his position at right-back, while the arrival of Joao Cancelo gives the manager even greater flexibility.
Rather than being forced to rely on the same defensive partnership every week, Flick now has the ability to change his back four according to form, injuries and the specific threat posed by opponents.
Xavi Espart Making His Opportunity Count
One of the most intriguing developments has been the emergence of Xavi Espart.
The young defender has started both league matches and has impressed with his composure and versatility.
His ability to operate at left-back while also contributing in midfield gives Flick another tactical weapon. Alejandro Balde was left on the bench against Athletic, allowing Espart to continue his impressive run.
For a young academy graduate, it is an opportunity he appears determined to seize.
Barcelona’s Defence Could Become a Major Strength
There is still a long way to go in the season, and two matches are certainly not enough to declare Barcelona defensively transformed.
However, the early signs are extremely encouraging.
Flick has greater depth, more tactical flexibility and several young players pushing established stars for places. The result is a Barcelona defence that has looked more organised and difficult to break down.
While the club continues searching for attacking reinforcements, Flick may already have found some of the answers he needs at the back.
