Lamine Yamal Sends Strong Ballon d’Or Message: ‘I’m a Player Who Makes a Difference’

Lamine Yamal has made it clear that he does not believe his age should influence the decision over who wins this year's Ballon d'Or.

The Barcelona teenager remains among the leading contenders for the prestigious award after another outstanding campaign, although his relatively quiet World Cup by his usual standards has become one of the main points raised against his candidacy.

Yamal, however, believes his overall body of work deserves to be judged on its own merits.

And he strengthened his case again at Wembley, scoring Spain's opening goal in their thrilling 3-2 victory over England while also creating several dangerous opportunities for his teammates.

In an interview with The Guardian, Yamal addressed his Ballon d'Or ambitions and insisted that his performances have been at the required level for much longer than just the current season.

“Honestly, I don’t think it’s just this year that I’ve been at the level to win the Ballon d’Or, but it’s been for a longer time.”

The Barcelona star believes his age can sometimes work against him when people assess his chances.

At just 19, Yamal suggested that some voters may view him as someone who will inevitably win the award in the future and therefore choose another candidate this time.

“Everybody knows it, and they know I’m a player who makes a difference. I believe some people think: Lamine is 19, he’ll win Ballon d’Or someday, so let’s give it to someone else.”

For Yamal, however, age should not determine whether a player deserves individual recognition.

‘I Just Have to Win, Win and Win’

Yamal also explained how he intends to settle the debate surrounding his place among football's elite.

Rather than focusing on what critics or voters think, he believes continued success will eventually make his case impossible to ignore.

“I just have to win, win, and win, and there’ll come a moment when there won’t be any debate.”

The teenager also acknowledged that his growing profile will naturally divide opinion.

“There will be people who love it and others who say: he’s so annoying… and that’s normal.”

It is a confident message from a player who has already achieved an extraordinary amount at such a young age.

Yamal's Strong Case Despite World Cup Numbers

Yamal's campaign with Barcelona provides the foundation for his Ballon d'Or case.

He was one of the most influential players in a Barcelona side that enjoyed an exceptional domestic season, while also helping Spain lift the World Cup.
