Joao Felix Dreams of Barcelona Return — But There May Be No Place for Him

Joao Felix reportedly wants another chance at Barcelona, but the Portuguese forward could find the door closed when he looks for a return to Europe next summer.

The former Barcelona loanee is currently playing for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia after leaving European football, but his contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

With a return to Europe now on his mind, Barcelona reportedly remain his preferred destination.

The problem is that the Catalan club does not appear to share the same enthusiasm.

Felix Really Does Want to Return

According to Matteo Moretto on Radio MARCA, the rumours surrounding Felix's desire to return to Barcelona are genuine.

The Portuguese international would reportedly choose Barça as his preferred destination if he decides to return to Europe after his spell in Saudi Arabia.

Felix enjoyed some positive moments during his previous loan at Barcelona, but his performances were not enough to convince the club to make his move permanent.

He eventually continued his career elsewhere, while Barcelona moved forward with a different attacking project.

Now, despite Felix's desire for a second opportunity, the club's current sporting plans make a reunion difficult.

Barcelona Already Have Too Many Attacking Options

The biggest obstacle is not necessarily Felix's quality.

It is competition.

The Portuguese forward is capable of operating in several attacking positions, including on the left wing, as a second striker, through the middle and in an attacking midfield role.

But Barcelona already have considerable depth across those positions.

Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi provide options on the left, while Dani Olmo and Fermín López compete for attacking midfield minutes.

Then there are established stars such as Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, alongside other attacking options including Gabriel Jesus.

Adding Felix to the squad would therefore create another player competing for minutes in positions where Barcelona already have several alternatives.

His Previous Barcelona Spell Also Matters

Felix's previous spell at the club also appears to be part of the equation.

Although he produced some memorable performances, Barcelona ultimately decided against turning his loan into a permanent transfer.

At a club where expectations are exceptionally high, a player must consistently convince the sporting hierarchy that he can become an important part of the long-term project.

Felix did not quite reach that level during his time in Catalonia.

That does not mean Barcelona have written off his ability, but it helps explain why the club are not currently pushing for his return.

Felix's Barcelona Dream Could Remain Unfulfilled

For Felix, Barcelona remains an attractive destination.

For Barça, however, the situation is very different.

The current squad already possesses multiple players capable of performing the roles Felix would occupy, meaning there is little obvious sporting need to bring him back.

Unless Barcelona's attacking hierarchy changes significantly before next summer, Felix's dream of returning to Camp Nou could therefore remain just that — a dream.

The Portuguese forward may still have an opportunity to return to European football, but Barcelona currently appear unlikely to be the club that gives him that opportunity.
