Getafe Defender Zaid Romero Sends Barcelona a Warning: ‘Nothing Is Impossible’
Getafe are preparing for a difficult test against Barcelona, but defender Zaid Romero has made it clear that his team will not travel to Spotify Camp Nou simply to admire Hansi Flick’s side.
The Argentine centre-back believes Getafe can trouble Barcelona if they combine tactical discipline with the right mentality. He has also explained the challenge of defending against Lamine Yamal and the movement of Barcelona’s attacking players, while making his position on the Ballon d’Or debate unmistakably clear.
Speaking to MARCA, Romero insisted that belief and commitment could help Getafe compete against one of Spain’s strongest teams.
Romero Warns Barcelona That Getafe Will Not Give Up
Barcelona possess considerable attacking quality, but Romero believes Getafe can draw confidence from their performances against several major Spanish clubs last season.
Rather than allowing Barcelona’s reputation to intimidate them, the defender wants his teammates to remain disciplined, follow the manager’s instructions and approach the match with a winning mentality.
“Football is a game for men and knights; we must show character, do what the manager asks of us, and go out to play, whilst always respecting all our opponents and with a winning mentality,” Romero explained.
He pointed to Getafe’s previous victories over Villarreal, Real Madrid, Real Betis and Athletic Club as evidence that his side can compete against high-level opposition.
“Last season we put in some great performances against top-flight sides. We beat Villarreal, Real Madrid, Real Betis and Athletic; we showed character and came out on top. Nothing is impossible for those who believe,” he added.
The message is clear: Getafe intend to approach Barcelona with confidence rather than fear.
Barcelona’s Attacking Movement Presents a Different Challenge
Romero also acknowledged that defending against Barcelona requires more than simply preparing for a conventional centre-forward.
A striker such as Robert Lewandowski offers a different challenge from an attacking unit built around movement, quick combinations and players who regularly interchange positions.
Barcelona’s forward line can feature Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Dani Olmo, all capable of exploiting spaces between defensive lines. For Getafe, that means remaining alert and adapting their defensive approach throughout the match.
“You have to adapt to the teams. One day you might face a number nine like Lewandowski or like Muriqi back in the day, more of a penalty-box striker,” Romero said.
“Then you face these guys who are dynamic and intense. You have to be prepared.”
His comments highlight one of Barcelona’s biggest tactical strengths under Flick: the ability to create danger through movement and combinations rather than relying exclusively on a traditional striker.
How Getafe Plan to Deal With Lamine Yamal
Lamine Yamal will be among the Barcelona players Getafe must monitor most carefully.
The young winger’s close control, creativity and understanding with his teammates can make him difficult to contain, particularly when he receives the ball in dangerous areas or finds room between defenders.
Romero believes concentration will be essential if Getafe are to limit the influence of Barcelona’s attacking stars.
“With those players, they truly have an extraordinary level, and when they’re together, between the lines, with their teammates, with the defenders, you can’t afford to lose focus,” he explained.
“We know the kind of players they are.”
Getafe will therefore need to maintain their defensive organisation and avoid giving Barcelona’s forwards the time and space required to create chances. Even a brief lapse in concentration could prove costly against a team with so much attacking quality.
Whether Getafe can execute that plan for the full 90 minutes remains to be seen.
Romero Names Lionel Messi as His Ballon d’Or Choice
Away from the upcoming match, Romero also shared his opinion on the Ballon d’Or debate, making it clear that Lionel Messi remains his preferred choice.
The Argentine defender described Messi as the greatest player in football history and argued that the forward’s achievements at his age only strengthen his case.
“I’m Argentine and I’ll always favour Messi, because he’s the best player in history. There’s no other player like him; he’s the best in history,” Romero stated.
He also highlighted what he considers one of Messi’s most admirable qualities: his humility despite his extraordinary career.
“As for Messi’s age and his World Cup performance, I’ve never seen anyone else of the same age achieve that. My answer will always be Messi,” he continued.
Romero believes Messi’s attitude separates him from many other elite players, pointing out that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has rarely spoken publicly as though individual honours were something he deserved automatically.
“What also sets him apart is that, throughout his career, he has never said: ‘I am the best player in the world’.”
“Throughout his career, he has never said that he should win the Ballon d’Or. It’s impressive that, despite being the best, he always remains humble,” he concluded.
Barcelona Must Be Ready for a Fight
Barcelona will enter the contest with the attacking talent to hurt Getafe, but Romero’s comments underline the challenge Flick’s team could face.
Getafe intend to rely on organisation, concentration and belief, while paying particular attention to the movement of Yamal and Barcelona’s other attacking threats.
For Barcelona, the task will be to turn their technical superiority into clear chances while avoiding the frustration that can arise against a determined defensive opponent.
Romero has delivered his warning. Now, Barcelona must answer it on the pitch.
