Chelsea Interest in Jules Kounde Could Open Door for Barcelona Right-Back Change

Barcelona could be forced to make an important decision over Jules Kounde’s future if Chelsea make a substantial offer for the French defender.

According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona could consider selling Kounde if the financial package is attractive enough. The club reportedly believes his departure could generate significantly more money than it would cost to sign a replacement, turning the situation into both a sporting and financial decision.

One potential replacement has already emerged.

Barcelona Considering Right-Back Alternatives

Sporting CP defender Ivan Fresneda is reportedly among the options being considered, with Barcelona sporting director Deco said to be an admirer of the 22-year-old.

Pedro Porro is another name being discussed, giving Barcelona multiple possibilities should they decide to reshape their right-back position.

Kounde remains an important part of Hansi Flick’s squad because of his defensive reliability and versatility. However, his position at the club is no longer considered completely untouchable.

The Frenchman has previously admitted that he fell below his own standards last season, while his recent spell on the bench has also highlighted the increased competition for places.

Chelsea Interest Could Change Everything

Chelsea’s interest could become particularly significant because Barcelona continue to operate under financial restrictions.

A major transfer fee for Kounde would give the Catalan club greater financial flexibility, potentially allowing them to strengthen other areas of the squad while bringing in a more natural right-back.

However, Barcelona would need to think carefully before making such a move.

Kounde’s ability to play across the defensive line makes him extremely valuable, especially with Andreas Christensen once again dealing with injury problems.

Eric Garcia has also shown that he can perform in multiple positions, but Barcelona may increasingly need him as a centre-back.

Fresneda and Porro Offer Different Profiles

Fresneda would represent a long-term investment. The 22-year-old came through the Real Madrid youth system before developing at Real Valladolid and eventually moving to Sporting CP, where his performances have attracted Deco’s attention.

Porro, meanwhile, would provide Barcelona with a more attack-minded option.

The Spanish full-back has previously been linked with a move to Camp Nou and could potentially develop a strong partnership with Lamine Yamal on the right flank.

His ability to make overlapping runs and contribute in the final third could give Yamal additional freedom and support.

Barcelona Face a Major Decision

For now, Kounde’s departure would only make sense if Barcelona can find a replacement capable of maintaining the defensive balance he provides.

The club must therefore carefully weigh the potential transfer income against the cost of signing a new right-back—and, perhaps most importantly, the value of losing one of Flick’s most versatile defenders.

If Chelsea put a huge offer on the table, Barcelona may have a difficult decision to make.
