Barcelona and Real Madrid Lead Race for Manchester United Wonderkid JJ Gabriel

Barcelona and Real Madrid are reportedly leading the race to sign Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel, with the highly rated prospect potentially costing more than €10 million.

The 16-year-old has attracted significant attention in recent weeks after reportedly stopping training with Manchester United and expressing his desire to leave the club. His situation has alerted several European heavyweights, including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite Barcelona sporting director Deco previously making comments that appeared to distance the club from the pursuit, the Catalan giants are still monitoring the England youth international as the competition for his signature intensifies.

Barcelona and Real Madrid Emerge as Favourites

According to Sky Sport Germany, Barcelona and Real Madrid are currently the best-positioned clubs to secure Gabriel's signature.

Bayern Munich remain interested in the Manchester United youngster, but the report suggests that Gabriel would prefer a move to Spain. That preference could give both Spanish giants an advantage as they look to convince one of Europe's most promising young talents to join their project.

Gabriel could potentially leave Manchester United as early as the January transfer window, putting the coming months in focus for the clubs hoping to secure his services.

For Barcelona, the opportunity to bring another elite prospect into their development system would fit their long-standing tradition of nurturing young players and giving academy talents a pathway towards the first team.

JJ Gabriel Could Cost More Than €10 Million

The financial demands surrounding the potential transfer could prove decisive.

Earlier reports suggested that Manchester United might receive just over €300,000 in training compensation if Gabriel departed. There were also claims that the teenager was seeking an annual salary worth seven figures.

However, Sky Sport Germany now reports that the overall cost of the operation could exceed €10 million, potentially reaching the €10 million to €15 million range or higher when transfer-related payments, bonuses and other costs are included.

That figure could complicate negotiations, particularly for Barcelona, who would need to decide whether such a substantial investment in a 16-year-old represents the right use of their available resources.

Although Gabriel's potential is attracting interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs, his age means any investment would involve a degree of uncertainty. Barcelona must weigh the possibility of securing a future star against the financial commitment required to complete the deal.

Barcelona's Academy Could Give Them an Advantage

One factor that could work in Barcelona's favour is Gabriel's reported preference for a move to Spain.

The Catalan club also have a powerful selling point in their record of developing young footballers through La Masia and promoting talented prospects into the senior squad. That pathway could appeal to a player seeking opportunities to develop and eventually compete at the highest level.

However, Real Madrid's interest means Barcelona cannot assume they will win the race simply because of their reputation for developing young talent.

The financial package, the player's development plan and the opportunities available to him could all influence the final decision.

With a possible January departure on the horizon, Barcelona face an important decision: whether to commit a significant sum to secure Gabriel now or risk losing one of Europe's most closely watched teenage prospects to a major rival.

The race is developing, but whether the Blaugrana are prepared to meet the reported financial demands remains the key question.
