Egypt U20 Manager Casts Doubt on Barcelona Youngster Hamza Abdelkarim’s AFCON Participation: ‘Unlikely’
Barcelona youngster Hamza Abdelkarim could miss the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, with Egypt’s youth team manager Ahmed Raouf admitting that the striker’s participation in the tournament is unlikely.
The Egyptian forward has been working to establish himself at Barcelona after joining the club in the summer. Although his first-team minutes have been limited, he is viewed as a promising attacking option whose opportunities could increase as the season progresses.
However, a potential clash between international commitments and Barcelona’s demanding schedule has created uncertainty over his availability for Egypt’s upcoming youth competitions.
According to SPORT, Raouf has acknowledged that including Abdelkarim in the AFCON squad may prove difficult, although Egypt still hope to have him available for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Egypt U20 Manager Delivers Uncertain AFCON Update
Abdelkarim’s international future has become a subject of discussion as Egypt plan for their upcoming youth tournaments.
Speaking about the striker’s availability, Raouf indicated that the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations could come too soon for the Barcelona youngster.
“The participation of Hamza Abdelkarim in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations is unlikely, but we aspire to count on him in the Youth World Cup,” the Egypt U20 manager said.
The 2027 U-20 AFCON is scheduled for February, a potentially important period in Barcelona’s season when squad depth and player availability could become particularly significant.
Barcelona may be reluctant to release a developing first-team option during such a demanding stretch of the campaign, especially if the forward is beginning to earn more opportunities under Hansi Flick.
Egypt, meanwhile, will have to consider alternative options if Abdelkarim is unavailable for the continental tournament.
Raouf’s comments suggest that the situation remains uncertain rather than confirming a final decision over the youngster’s participation.
Barcelona Want Hamza Abdelkarim to Focus on His Development
Abdelkarim’s immediate priority appears to be establishing himself at Barcelona.
His playing time has been limited so far, and he faces competition for attacking opportunities. However, remaining with the club could give him more time to adapt to the team’s tactical demands, improve his understanding with his teammates and push for a more prominent role.
The report from SPORT suggests that Barcelona are reluctant to release him for international duty during the September window. It also indicates that the player shares the preference to remain with the club and pursue greater continuity.
For a young forward attempting to break into a competitive squad, regular training and consistent involvement can be important to his development.
Leaving for international duty could interrupt that process, particularly if the timing coincides with a period when opportunities are opening up at club level.
However, the suggestion that Abdelkarim will become a major first-team option later in the season remains a possibility rather than a guarantee. He will still need to convince Flick that he deserves more minutes.
Egypt Face a Difficult Decision Over Their Young Star
Abdelkarim’s potential absence would be a setback for Egypt’s youth setup, particularly if the coaching staff view him as a central figure in their plans.
International youth tournaments provide valuable experience, allowing emerging players to test themselves against opponents from different footballing backgrounds. Missing the U-20 AFCON could therefore represent a significant disappointment for both the player and the Egyptian team.
At the same time, Barcelona have their own sporting considerations. The club must balance the player’s international ambitions with his development, workload and potential contribution to the senior squad.
The situation also highlights a familiar challenge for clubs and national teams: finding the right balance between international development and the demands of domestic football.
Whether Abdelkarim ultimately participates will depend on his availability, the applicable release arrangements and the decisions made by the relevant parties.
The U-20 World Cup Could Offer Egypt Another Opportunity
Although Raouf considers Abdelkarim’s AFCON participation unlikely, Egypt remain hopeful of including him in the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
That tournament could provide another opportunity for the forward to represent his country, although its schedule and the circumstances surrounding his availability will need to be clarified.
For now, the immediate focus remains on his development at Barcelona and whether he can earn a more substantial role under Flick.
Egypt will hope to have one of their promising young attackers available when the World Cup arrives. Barcelona, meanwhile, will want the striker to continue progressing within their system.
The situation is not yet fully resolved, but Raouf’s comments have made one thing clear: Abdelkarim’s participation in the U-20 AFCON should not be taken for granted.
