Barcelona chooses Al Ahly as Joan Gamper Trophy Opponents Ahead of New Season
Barcelona have officially decided on their opponents for this year's Joan Gamper Trophy, with Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly set to visit Spotify Camp Nou for the traditional pre-season curtain-raiser.
According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the two clubs have reached an agreement for the highly anticipated fixture, which will take place on August 19.
The match will mark Barcelona's first appearance at their renovated home stadium ahead of the new campaign and will provide Hansi Flick's squad with an important opportunity to prepare for the challenges ahead.
Barcelona Target Global Growth With Al Ahly Clash
The decision to face Al Ahly is not only about football.
The Egyptian club is one of the most successful teams in African football history and enjoys enormous popularity across the continent. The fixture presents Barcelona with an opportunity to strengthen their global presence, particularly in Egypt, a country with a population of more than 100 million people.
The match also carries a special connection between the two clubs through Hamza Abdelkarim, the young Egyptian striker who joined Barcelona's youth setup during the winter transfer window after developing at Al Ahly.
Facing his former club could add another interesting storyline to the occasion.
Barcelona Considered Several Alternatives
Before finalizing Al Ahly as opponents, Barcelona explored multiple possibilities for this year's Gamper Trophy.
German side RB Leipzig were initially among the candidates, but scheduling difficulties and logistical challenges prevented the Bundesliga club from taking part.
Barcelona also considered inviting Dutch giants Ajax for the traditional friendly.
A meeting with Ajax would have held special emotional significance, especially as this year marks the 10th anniversary of the passing of Johan Cruyff, one of the most influential figures in Barcelona's history and someone who played a major role in shaping both clubs' football identities.
However, Ajax's involvement in UEFA Conference League qualifying made the fixture impossible, forcing Barcelona to look elsewhere.
Busy Pre-Season Schedule Ahead of Gamper Trophy
The Al Ahly match will not be Barcelona's first test of pre-season.
The Blaugrana are preparing for a demanding summer schedule that will include several friendly matches before facing the Egyptian champions.
Barcelona are expected to begin their preparations with a meeting against CE Europa on July 24.
The squad will then travel to England for a training camp, where they are scheduled to face Birmingham City and could also play another friendly against Preston North End.
After the England trip, Barcelona will continue their preparations in Italy, where they are set to participate in a triangular tournament featuring Udinese and Nottingham Forest.
Additional fixtures could still be added as Flick looks to build match fitness, test tactical ideas and integrate new signings before the competitive season begins.
A Traditional Night Under the Lights at Camp Nou
The Joan Gamper Trophy has always been more than just a friendly match for Barcelona. It represents the club's annual opportunity to introduce new players, connect with supporters and officially welcome the new season.
With Al Ahly arriving as opponents, Barcelona will have the chance to celebrate their return to Camp Nou while facing one of Africa's most respected football institutions.
For Flick and his players, the match will provide another valuable step toward building momentum before the new campaign begins.
