Barcelona Continue Summer Reinforcements
FC Barcelona are showing no signs of slowing down in the transfer market as the club continues reshaping the squad ahead of the new season under Hansi Flick.
After intensifying efforts to strengthen the attack with targets such as Anthony Gordon and Julian Alvarez, the Catalan giants are now focusing attention on reinforcing the defensive line.
One of the key priorities for Flick is the arrival of a naturally left-footed central defender, a profile the club believes could improve both defensive balance and ball progression from the back. While Alessandro Bastoni had been closely monitored in recent weeks, Barcelona’s interest in the Inter Milan star appears to have cooled temporarily.
Instead, another elite defender has entered the conversation — Josko Gvardiol.
The Manchester City defender is reportedly open to a move to Spain should an opportunity arise, and his versatility is believed to be highly attractive to Flick and Barcelona’s sporting department.
Gvardiol Could Become Cubarsi’s Ideal Defensive Partner
The most obvious role for Gvardiol would be at centre-back alongside rising sensation Pau Cubarsi.
Barcelona have struggled to establish a fully settled defensive partnership around Cubarsi due to injuries, rotations, and inconsistent performances from several defenders throughout the season. Gvardiol’s arrival could finally provide long-term balance in the heart of the defence.
The Croatian international offers qualities that fit perfectly into Flick’s tactical philosophy. Comfortable under pressure and highly composed in possession, Gvardiol would allow Barcelona to build attacks more smoothly from deep areas.
His strong physical presence, recovery speed, and aggressive style in duels would also help Barcelona maintain the high defensive line that Flick prefers. Meanwhile, Cubarsi could continue operating as the calmer distributor from the right side of central defence.
Together, the pair could form one of Europe’s most balanced young defensive partnerships.
A Defensive Left-Back Option for Big Matches
Another possibility would see Gvardiol operating as a more defensive left-back.
Last season, Barcelona found stability through the defensive understanding between Gerard Martin and Cubarsi on the left side. Rather than completely changing that structure, Flick could use Gvardiol in a hybrid role similar to the one he occasionally played under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
Instead of constantly pushing forward like a traditional attacking full-back, Gvardiol could move inside during possession phases and temporarily form a back three.
This tactical adjustment would provide greater defensive protection while also giving Barcelona’s attacking players more freedom higher up the pitch. Against elite opponents, especially in Europe, such an approach could add much-needed defensive solidity without sacrificing control of possession.
Flick Could Experiment With a Three-Man Defense
Perhaps the most exciting scenario is the possibility of Flick introducing a back-three system.
Although the German coach has largely preferred a four-man defence during his managerial career, Gvardiol’s versatility could allow Barcelona to become far more flexible tactically.
At Manchester City, some of Gvardiol’s strongest performances came as the left-sided centre-back in a three-man defensive setup. In that role, he frequently stepped into midfield, carried the ball forward, and supported attacks while still maintaining defensive security.
A potential trio involving Cubarsi, Ronald Araujo, and Gvardiol would combine technical quality, pace, strength, and composure.
Barcelona would also have additional depth in that system with players like Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde capable of rotating into the back line.
Such tactical flexibility could become a major weapon for Flick, particularly in high-pressure UEFA Champions League matches where defensive structure and ball control are crucial.
For now, Barcelona have yet to make a decisive move for Gvardiol. However, his profile appears perfectly suited to Flick’s evolving project, and if negotiations accelerate, the Croatian defender could become one of the club’s most important signings of the summer.
