Barcelona’s Left-Wing Battle Takes an Unexpected Turn After Adeyemi’s Emergence

Karim Adeyemi’s arrival at Barcelona was initially viewed as a move that would add depth to Hansi Flick’s attack rather than immediately disrupt the starting lineup.

Anthony Gordon was expected to compete for significant minutes on the left, while Adeyemi was seen as another attacking option who could also provide cover for Lamine Yamal on the opposite flank.

Seven matches into the new season, however, the situation has changed considerably.

According to SPORT, Flick is enjoying the competition between his two summer signings, with Adeyemi’s early performances forcing his way into a much more prominent role.

Adeyemi Has Changed Flick’s Initial Plans

Barcelona’s 7-2 victory over Racing Santander provided perhaps the clearest evidence of Adeyemi’s growing importance.

The German winger started and completed the full 90 minutes, while Gordon remained on the bench. Although Adeyemi did not get on the scoresheet, his pace and direct approach caused Racing constant problems.

He won two penalties and repeatedly exposed the opposition defence with aggressive runs behind the backline.

That performance came after he had already impressed as a substitute against Levante, continuing what has been an encouraging start to his Barcelona career.

Adeyemi has featured in all seven matches so far, starting three and coming off the bench in four.

His return of three goals, one assist and two penalties won is particularly impressive considering he initially began the campaign behind other options in Flick’s plans.

The 24-year-old was originally viewed primarily as an alternative to Yamal on the right, but Flick has increasingly deployed him on the left, where his pace and ability to attack open space have become major weapons.

Gordon Now Faces Genuine Competition

Adeyemi’s rise does not necessarily mean Gordon has fallen out of favour.

The former Newcastle United winger remains highly rated by Flick and has already contributed five assists this season, despite not yet finding the net.

However, Adeyemi’s performances have ensured that Gordon can no longer take his playing time for granted.

That competition could ultimately benefit Barcelona.

Deco brought in two young attackers with different profiles, giving Flick the flexibility to rotate between Adeyemi and Gordon without significantly weakening the left side of his attack.

There is also little reason to move Raphinha back to his previous position on the left.

The Brazilian has excelled as a false nine this season and has already scored nine league goals, making his current role increasingly difficult to change.

With Adeyemi and Gordon battling for the left flank, Flick now has more attacking options while allowing Raphinha to continue operating in the position where he has been most productive.
